Our Mission

The primary purpose of the MTA PBA is to serve as a representative for the welfare of union members and to be the sole collective bargaining agent for all Police Officers, Detectives, Sergeants, and Lieutenants.

Our Core Objectives

To promote and develop a friendly and fraternal spirit among members of the Police Department.

To aid fellow members in good standing upon necessity or emergency.

To advance the general welfare and efficiency of the members of the Police Department.

To promote legislation beneficial to the interests of the members and their families and to oppose legislation detrimental to those interests.

Key Milestones

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department is New York's police agency. MTAPD officers are empowered under New York State law and commissioned in Connecticut. Their jurisdiction spans fourteen counties, covering about 5,000 square miles, including New York City and southern Connecticut, serving 14.4 million people.

June 30, 1997

NY Governor George Pataki signs legislation creating the MTA Police Department.

January 1, 1998

LIRR Police Department and MNRR Police Departments merged creating the MTA Police Department.

August 10, 1998

The LIRR PBA and MNRR PBA merged as a single collective bargaining unit for the newly established MTA PBA.

June 1, 2005

MTA Police Department absorbs the Staten Island Railway Police Department, creating District #9 on Staten Island.

March 1, 2016

MTA Police Department achieves Accreditation status from New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

January 1, 2018

MTA Police Department celebrates 20th Anniversary.

June 17, 2019

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo announces plan to hire 500 additional MTA Police Officers to assist with NYCT Subway quality of life issues.

March 9, 2025

MTA Police Department expands to the bridges, taking over security of the Throgsneck and Whitestone bridges.

October, 15, 2025

Bridges expansion continues to the Cross Bay, Marine Park, and Henry Hudson Bridges.

March 5, 2026

Bridges expansion is complete with the addition of the Robert F. Kennedy and Verrazano Narrows bridges.  The MTA Police Department now patrols all of the MTA Bridges
